Fortress Merge Skill Priority

The draft is a second shop. Global cards win more maps than pretty Epics.

Skill Priority

Every merge fills an XP bar. When it pops, Fortress Merge offers three skill cards. That draft decides more runs than the next shop reroll, because a global cooldown cut applies to every turret and camp you already placed. A 10% horseman card applies to nobody if you field mages. This page is the pick order. Pair it with gold and upgrades for how you pay, and with when to merge so you are not filling the bar by deleting your army.

The three buckets

Global. Building cooldown reduction, building HP or durability, all-turret damage, all-mage damage, free blockers / tree unlocks when the board is still cramped. Take these whenever they appear. They do not care which camp you rolled.

Role. Front-line HP for knights and horsemen. Attack or radius for archers and mages. Thorns on barricades when the pack is melee. Take these only if that role already occupies tiles. A radius card on a mage board is a gift. The same card on a ranch zoo is a skip.

Narrow / vanity. Single-unit 10% damage, a banner-style aura you already own, “next three blockers free” after the trees are gone. Skip, or gem-reroll on a boss draft.

The Japanese campaign guides that grind this loop to level 50 say the same thing in fewer words: front and back have jobs, and wasted merges make the draft worse because you level up on a board that can no longer use the card.

Default pick order

  1. Building cooldown (everything shoots and spawns sooner).
  2. Building HP / durability (stall survives the slam).
  3. Family-wide damage that matches your unit plan.
  4. Barricade thorns if walls are already on the lane.
  5. Free space / tree unlocks if you are still boxed in.
  6. Everything else, including most Epics that name one unit you do not field.

Rarity is not a rank. An Epic “next blockers free” on a clear board is worse than a Rare cooldown. The HUD will flash purple. Ignore the color until you read the text.

When to gem-reroll

Free gems exist for this click, not for wave-1 shop spam. Reroll when all three cards are narrow and a boss is next. Some drafts show a legendary-guaranteed counter paid in gems — that is a wave-10 tool. Do not spend it on trash waves so you can “see what legendary is.”

If gold is tight, you cannot buy a fourth shop card. You can still take a better skill. That is why this page sits next to the economy guide instead of inside it.

Skills versus the skill tree

Two systems share a name. In-fight drafts are the cards during a level. Skill tree / village nodes on mobile are permanent and sit in the lobby. Buy cheap cooldown and HP nodes there first, the same as the draft. Steam achievements such as First Steps, Skillfull, and Mad Skills count skill-tree unlocks, not in-fight cards — see achievements. Do not dump tree points into a horseman line if your console shop is a mage board.

Placement still wins

A perfect draft does not save a castle on the lane. Take the global, then go fix placement. Front walls, mid Teslas, back mages. If enemies walk around the wood, the skill did not fail. The tile did.

A worked draft

Three cards: Rare building cooldown, Epic horseman damage, Rare free blockers. You have two mage towers and a wall, and two trees left. Take the cooldown. The horseman card is a skip. The blockers card is second if you already own cooldown. That one decision is the whole page.

If the next draft is three unit names you do not spawn, Fight without a pick if the UI allows it, or gem-reroll only because a boss is next. Curiosity is how accounts go broke.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Should I always take the Epic card?

No. Read the text. A Rare global cooldown beats an Epic 10% buff for a unit you do not spawn.

Do in-fight skills persist after the level?

No. Drafts are for that run. The mobile skill tree is the permanent list.

When do I reroll the draft?

On a boss wave when all three cards are narrow. Save gems for that, not for curiosity.
