Free Gems and Gold

Fortress Merge pays two scarce currencies on a free account: gold that you spend inside a battle, and gems that you spend between battles. There is no verified gift-code table — see the codes hub — so this page is the actual farm. Gold comes from mines that survive the wave, leftover shop sales, and a few post-fight bonuses. Gems come from the shop, optional ads, new-unit claims, and the occasional event chest.

Treat gems as a bank, not a fidget. The skill draft on wave 10 can ask for a five-gem reroll with a legendary-guaranteed counter. That single click is often worth more than a cosmetic pack. Gold is the opposite: it must be spent this fight on trees, rerolls, or you lose it when the castle falls.

Gold inside a fight

Place at least one gold mine as soon as the shop offers it, then merge mines when you have spare tiles. A higher-tier mine pays more tokens per round, but only if enemies do not crush it. Park mines behind barricades and off the main lane. If a mine dies, you miss that round’s payout even if you win the wave.

The shop shows three buildings. The first reroll is cheap — sometimes free — and then the gold cost climbs. Reroll when you still have empty tiles. If the board is full, selling a junk camp is usually better than paying for a roll you cannot place. Placement and when to merge decide whether you even need that roll.

Before a boss wave, sell mines that will not survive anyway and convert the gold into walls or a turret. A dead mine on wave 10 is a wasted tile and a wasted payout.

Gems between fights

The shop is the first stop after a clear. Claim the free coin node once per day. Mobile builds also let you watch a short set of videos for gems; skip tickets bypass the ad if you bought them. Do not chain extra ads for chests until your hero gear actually needs shards.

Every time you merge a new unit type, the army book lights up. Claim those gems immediately. They are one-time per discovery, so a player who never opens the book leaves currency on the table.

Village or idle chests on mobile pay extra blueprints if you double-claim with an ad. That is a three-minute login even on days you do not run a full level. Steam and console HUDs may fold some of those buttons into a simpler shop — check controls if you cannot find the mobile layout.

What to spend gems on

  1. Skill rerolls on a boss draft when the three cards are all narrow unit buffs and you need a global cooldown or building HP card.
  2. A missing wall or turret only if the shop is stuck and the lane is already leaking.
  3. Gear bags after you have picked a main hero so shards are not split across three sets.
  4. Skip tickets only if ads are blocking your session more than the gem cost.

Do not gem-reroll the shop on wave 1. Do not buy random hero packs before you know which of the three Steam heroes (or the larger mobile roster) you will actually field.

Gold vs gems: a simple rule

Gold solves this board. Gems solve tomorrow’s board. If a choice could wait until after the fight, it is a gem choice. If the castle dies this wave without the purchase, it is a gold choice. The economy guide walks the in-fight order in more detail: trees, then mines, then targeted rerolls, then sells.

Pair this farm with how to redeem so you are ready if a real string appears, and with the building tier list so extra gold becomes the right camp instead of a third banner.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What is the fastest free gem method?

Claim shop dailies, new-unit codex gems, and the daily ad set. Do not spend them on early shop rerolls.

Do mines pay if they are destroyed?

You miss that round's gold if the mine dies. Place them behind walls and sell them before a boss if they will not live.

Should I watch every reward ad?

Watch the daily gem ads and the double-blueprint village claim. Skip random chest ads until you have a gear plan.
