Fortress Merge Gold and Upgrades
Spend this fight's gold on space and stall. Spend gems on tomorrow.
Gold in Fortress Merge has a short life. You earn it from mines that survive the wave, from selling buildings, and from a few post-fight bonuses. You spend it in the same fight on tree clears, shop rerolls, and the occasional unlock. When the castle dies, the leftover pile dies with the run. That is why this page is a spend order, not a “get rich” myth.
Gems are the long wallet. They live on free rewards. Do not mix the two: gold is for this lane, gems are for skill rerolls and gear.
Spend order inside a fight
- Trees that block the lane or the castle. Space is damage. A locked front tile cannot take a wall.
- A wall if you do not have one. Stall is cheaper than a wipe.
- A mine you can actually protect. Unprotected mines are negative gold.
- One cheap reroll while empty tiles remain and the shop is all dead roles.
- Sells of duplicate banners, doomed mines, and off-plan camps.
- Nothing. Press Fight. Hoarding through a leak does not help.
Reroll price starts near zero and climbs. The first roll on a wide board is almost free information. The fifth roll on a full board is a donation. Placement decides whether you even have the right to roll.
How mines really pay
The HUD can show gold-per-round once a mine is down. That number is a promise, not a vault. If the mine is destroyed you miss the payout for that wave. Place mines in the back corners, merge them when the stall is real — see when to merge — and sell them on the boss prep if they will not live.
Two small mines behind a wall can beat one huge mine on the entrance. Economy is only economy if it survives.
XP and the skill draft
Merging any matching pair fills the XP bar. The draft offers three cards with rarities (Rare, Epic, sometimes a legendary-guaranteed reroll paid in gems). The upgrades that print value every wave:
- Building cooldown reduction.
- Building HP.
- Faction-wide damage (all turrets, all mages) when you actually field that row.
- Free blockers / tree unlocks when the board is still cramped.
The upgrades that look exciting and then do nothing: 10% horseman damage on a mage board, attack radius on a hero who already reaches the clump, a banner-style card when you already have the flag. Skip them. The boss guide repeats this because wave 10 is where a greedy pick is fatal.
Permanent village or skill-tree unlocks on mobile sit outside the fight. Buy the cheap cooldown and HP nodes first. Keep troop levels within about ten of the campaign stage so you are not feeding a stat wall. Steam’s three-hero build still uses in-fight XP the same way; only the lobby menus change. Controls shows where those menus sit.
What not to buy
- A third banner.
- A mine you cannot cover.
- A gem shop pack during an on-going leak.
- A hero you will not gear. Blueprints do not undo.
Optional paid packs (Claire on Steam, skip tickets, no-ads) are convenience. They do not replace a wall. If you do spend real money, buy the thing that removes friction (ads, cloud-looking saves) rather than a random gear bag before you have a main hero.
Between fights
After a clear, take the double-reward prompt when the extra minutes are worth the shards. Claim new-unit gems. Do not immediately dump them into a shop reroll on the next map’s wave 1. Bank them for a boss draft or a gear fuse.
If you are broke every fight, you are rolling too much or mining on the lane. Fix placement before you blame the economy. The building tier list will also stop you from buying a cute graveyard when you needed wood.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Why is my reroll so expensive?
Each roll in a fight costs more than the last. Stop when the board is full or the cards are already usable.
Do I keep gold if I retry a level?
In-fight gold resets with the run. Gems, gear, and village progress stay.
Is the banner worth a tile?
Yes, one copy. Merge extras. It lowers future reroll prices; it does not stack with a second flag.
