Hero Overview

A hero is a single tile that thinks it is a story. Treat it as a unit with a button. Steam’s launch copy is honest: three unique heroes, each with stats, a combat skill, and a permanent boost. Mobile is louder: a starter, a mid-game swap (Jeanne is the name players mention around level 30), later additions such as Esmeralda and the seasonal Undertaker, plus store packs. This page tells you how to choose, not how to collect.

Pair it with gear. A naked S-feeling hero still loses to a geared B if the boots never get fused.

The job, not the name

Before you care about a title screen, decide the job:

  • Melee bruiser — sits behind the wall, soaks a little, dumps the skill into the boss. Pair with barracks and extra wood.
  • Back-line damage — sits with mages, never on the spawn pixel. Pair with Tesla and catapult.
  • Aura / economy — the permanent boost is the real card (turret damage, cooldown, gold). The body can be average.

If the shop and building tier list already committed you to mages, do not main a horseman-aura hero. The permanent boost should rhyme with the board.

Steam and consoles (September 2026)

Play the three shipped heroes in the lobby until the boost text is obvious. Field the one whose aura matches your camps. Do not wait for a mobile-only unlock that this build may never add. Claire exists as a Steam pack — that is DLC, not a secret fourth campaign unlock. See console launch for store differences.

Controller users: the hero is still a drag-and-drop tile, then a skill button in a fight. Controls maps it. Do not leave them on the default spawn-adjacent square because the cursor started there.

Mobile roster notes

Hold hero blueprints until you know the swap. Several campaign guides tell players not to dump shards into the starter if a better fighter unlocks in the first month of play, because upgrades do not reverse. Gear blueprints can wait even longer — fuse rules are in the gear guide.

Event heroes (Undertaker and friends) are for the event playlist and for fun. They are not a reason to neglect walls. If the event scores kills on that hero’s minions, field them for the event, then return to your main.

In-fight habits

  1. Place after the wall exists so you know where the clump will stand.
  2. Hold the skill for wave 10 unless the castle is already leaking.
  3. If they die, they are still a building-like piece for the rest of the wave’s AI — do not strip the wall to “save” them.
  4. After the fight, spend shards on the name you just used, not on a bench fighter.

Hero Battle mode is the exam. If you cannot win it, the issue is usually gear depth or a mismatched aura, not a missing secret character. Challenge modes explains that playlist.

A simple pick order

  1. Read the permanent boost on each unlocked hero. Pick the one that names a family you already place (turrets, mages, walls).
  2. Place that hero behind stall for two campaign maps. If the skill feels invisible, you are dropping it on trash — hold it.
  3. Only then open the gear bags. Shards spent before step 1 are how accounts stall.
  4. On mobile, if a named unlock is one week away, sit on shards. On Steam, there is no secret fourth fighter in the base client — stop waiting and gear the three.

A hero who dies every wave is standing too far forward, not under-levelled. Move the tile before you buy a pack.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Can I bring two heroes?

No. One per fight. Unlock more in the lobby, field one.

When should I swap off the starter on mobile?

When a clearly better fighter unlocks and you have shards saved. Do not drip-feed both.

Does the hero replace a turret?

No. They add a skill and an aura. You still need stall and a damage row.
