Fortress Merge Placement Strategy
Every tile is a unit. Put stall on the path and damage where enemies are forced to stand.
A Fortress Merge board is a short lane with trees, water, or graves eating the edges. Enemies spawn at the top and walk toward the castle. Your job is not “fill every square.” Your job is to force the pack to stand inside turret range while spawners still have a path to walk out. This page is the layout. When to merge is the follow-up so you do not collapse the formation for a shiny tier.
The three rows
Front (spawn side): barricades, then barracks and ranches. Walls stall. Melee camps dump knights and horsemen onto the choke so the wall is not solo-tanking a giant. If you put mages here they die in two hits and your cooldown was wasted.
Middle: Tesla towers, turrets, catapults. They need the stall in front of them. A turret on the back row still fires, but a turret behind a wall that is holding the pack will dump its full magazine into a clump. Catapults want that clump even more.
Back (castle side): mage towers, archer camps, gold mines, the banner, supply crates, and the castle itself. Long-range pieces should never be the first building a slime touches. Mines should never be the first building a slime touches.
If the map is tiny, compress the same idea: wall, then damage, then castle. Do not invert it because the shop offered a mage first. Park the mage on a back tile even if that tile is “ugly.”
Lane geometry
Watch the first wave without speed-up. Some maps dogleg around a graveyard or a palm. A wall that is one tile off the true path is decoration. Place the barricade where feet actually step, then put the Tesla so its circle covers that exact square.
You can use a cheap camp as a temporary plug if the shop denies a wall. Replace it the moment a barricade appears. Getting started covers that emergency plug; this page assumes you already know you can sell.
Trees are not scenery. They are locked tiles. Pay to clear the ones that sit on the lane or that trap your castle in a corner. Do not clear every decorative tree in the water — that gold wants to be a reroll later, not a picnic tile.
Hero tile
The hero is a unit with a skill, not a wall. Place them just behind the stall so they swing at the clump and still live. If you park them on the spawn pixel they eat the boss slam meant for wood. If you park them next to the castle they never see the fight. See heroes for who wants to be closer (melee) versus who wants a back-line tile.
When to reroll the shop
Reroll when you still have empty tiles and the three cards are all the same dead role (three mines, three banners, three ranches when you already have horsemen). Do not reroll when the board is full: you will pay an increasing gold cost for a card you cannot place. Sell first, then roll.
Early rerolls are cheap. Later rerolls are a tax. If gold-per-round from mines is low, stop rolling and Fight with what you have. The gold guide puts numbers on that instinct; the placement rule is simpler: space first, shop second.
A banner that cuts reroll cost is worth one tile, not three. Merge extras. Supply crates that shorten neighbor cooldowns want to sit touching your turrets and camps, not floating in the water.
Formations that work on most maps
- Standard: wall wall / Tesla catapult / mage mage / castle and mine in the corners.
- Melee flood: wall / barracks barracks ranch / turret / castle. Use when the shop starves you of mages.
- Boss pocket: extra wall on the lane, mines sold, every leftover tile a turret or mage. Details in the boss guide.
Copy the idea, not the screenshot. A graveyard map and an ice-river map do not share the same choke. The building tier list tells you which piece is allowed to take a premium square when two cards fight for it.

After the rows feel obvious, stop placing “whatever the shop gave” and start refusing. That refusal is placement. The rest of the wiki — units, controls, challenge modes — only works if the lane is honest.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Where does the castle go?
Back row, off the walking path. You can drag it; you cannot merge or sell it.
Why do enemies ignore my wall?
The wall is not on the true path. Watch one wave at normal speed and move the barricade onto their feet.
Should I fill every tile?
Leave two empty squares for the next shop. A full board cannot take the wall you need on wave 9.
