How to Beat Fortress Merge Bosses

Wave 10 is a different game. Convert economy into stall and damage before the slam.

How to Beat Bosses

A normal Fortress Merge wave is a trickle. A boss wave is a health bar that walks. If your mines are still on the lane and your only wall is a 1-star stick, the castle dies while the Tesla is still winding up. This page is the conversion step: the fight before Fight on wave 10 (and on the extra boss that 13-wave maps hide around wave 8).

You should already know getting started, merge rules, and placement. If those three are fuzzy, a boss guide will just sound like “build better.”

Know which clock you are on

  • 10-wave maps: boss on wave 10. Prep on wave 9 is the last full shop.
  • 13-wave maps: extra boss around wave 8, final boss on 13. You must convert twice. Do not sell every mine on wave 7 if you still need gold for wave 12 — convert some economy, not all of it, on the mid-boss.

The HUD does not whisper. It prints Wave 8/13. Believe it. Speed-up is fine on trash waves; turn it off for the first seconds of a boss so you can see whether the slam is hitting wood or the castle.

The wave-9 sell list

  1. Mines that will not live. A boss that walks onto a mine deletes the payout and the tile. Sell, buy a wall or turret.
  2. Duplicate banners. One reroll-discount flag is enough.
  3. A camp that does not match your damage plan. If you went mages, the extra ranch is a body, not a build.
  4. Nothing that is currently stalling the lane. Do not sell the only barricade because you want a prettier sprite.

Spend the gold immediately. Gold in the counter does not reduce boss HP. Gold as a wall does.

Skills that actually matter

When the XP bar pops a draft on or near the boss wave, take global cards:

  • Building cooldown reduction (everything shoots and spawns sooner).
  • Building HP / durability (stall lasts the slam).
  • All-turret or all-mage damage if that is your row.
  • Barricade thorns if the boss is melee and eating the wall.

Skip narrow 10% horseman cards if you field two horsemen. Skip “next three blockers free” if the board is already unlocked. Gem-reroll the draft if all three cards are dead — this is the spend free gems were saved for. A five-gem reroll with a legendary-guaranteed counter is a boss tool, not a wave-2 toy.

Formation for the slam

Double the wood on the true path. Put the hero just behind that wood so the combat skill hits the boss, not the empty grass. Keep mages in the back so a cleave does not delete your DPS. Tesla and catapult must cover the stall tile — if the circle misses the feet, you are decorating.

If the boss flies or jumps (dragons, some giants), walls still help because the adds do not fly. Do not strip every barricade because “the boss ignores armor.” The pack behind the boss will still chew a naked castle.

Buildings that die during the boss wave come back if you survive. Sacrificing a front barracks to buy two more seconds of Tesla fire is legal. Sacrificing the castle is not. Move the castle again if the slam animation reaches it.

Hero and gear on boss maps

A hero with a burst skill should hold it for the boss, not dump it on wave 9 trash. Gear that adds cooldown or HP on buildings is worth more than a tiny personal attack stat you never see. Heroes and gear explain the long-term spend; the in-fight rule is: press the skill when the big bar appears.

If you still wipe

Retry the level. You do not lose the village or the hero ranks. Watch the wipe: did the boss walk around the wall, or through it? Around means placement. Through means you needed another merge on the barricade or a durability skill. Then check the building tier list — a third mine on a boss map is almost always the wrong tile.

Challenge playlists named Boss Fight exist on the post-campaign board. Treat them as this page with the volume turned up: same sells, same globals, less forgiveness. See challenge modes when campaign wave 10 feels routine.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

When do I sell mines before a boss?

On the prep before wave 10, or before the extra boss on 13-wave maps, if the mine will not survive the slam.

Should I gem-reroll skills on trash waves?

No. Save gem rerolls for a boss draft full of narrow unit cards.

Do destroyed buildings stay dead after a boss?

If you win the wave they return for the next shop. The castle is the only permanent failure.
