When to Merge in Fortress Merge
Two matching buildings become a stronger tier — but extra camps often beat one big one.
Merging is the name of the game and the easiest way to lose it. Two identical buildings at the same tier combine into the next tier: two 1-star archer camps become a 2-star, two 2-stars become a 3-star, up to tier 6 on current builds. The merge also grants XP toward the skill draft. That dopamine is real. It is also how players delete half their army for a prettier sprite.
The rule that actually wins maps: merge tanks and economy, hesitate on spawners. Pair this page with placement so the leftover copies sit in the right row.
Always merge: walls and mines
Barricades scale mostly as HP. Two small walls occupy two tiles and stall less than one merged wall plus a free tile for a Tesla. Merge them. Thorns and spike upgrades still work on the bigger piece, and you want that wood on the lane, not as a second skinny fence in the back.
Gold mines scale as payout per round. A merged mine pays more tokens than two tiny ones if it lives. Merge when you can hide the result behind a wall. If the only open tile is on the entrance, do not merge yet — a fat mine on the lane is a piñata.
Banners (the flag that cuts reroll cost) do not stack. One high-tier banner is enough. Merge extras into that one copy and spend the spare tile on damage.
Sometimes merge: turrets and catapults
Tesla towers and catapults gain damage and often a better cooldown when they rank up. Merge them if the stall in front is already solid. If you still have no wall, keep two low turrets covering two angles rather than one over-merged tower that enemies walk around.
Catapults are area damage. They shine when slimes clump on a barricade. A single high-tier catapult behind a wall is usually correct. Two low catapults are correct only when the lane is wide and the wall is not built yet.
Rarely merge: barracks, ranches, archer camps, mage towers
Unit buildings have a population cap and a spawn cooldown. Two tier-1 barracks often field more bodies, faster, than one tier-2 barracks, and they also give you two HP pools on the front. Merge them only when:
- you need the tile for a wall or turret you cannot place otherwise, or
- the higher tier’s cooldown drop is so large that one building outpaces two (late ranks, not the first merge), or
- you are converting a dead role (you already have enough horsemen and the ranch is blocking a mage).
Mage towers look like they want to be huge. They do not. Two mid mages in the back row cover more of the lane than one over-stacked tower hugging the castle. Keep them off the entrance so they stop eating slime auto-attacks.
How a merge is performed
Drag a shop card onto a matching building, or drag one placed building onto its twin. They must match type and tier. A 1-star wall will not eat a 2-star wall. If the highlight refuses, you are offering the wrong pair — sell or park the card on an empty tile instead of forcing it.
Merges grant XP even when the result is a wall. That is another reason to merge tanks: you get the skill bar without shrinking your army.
Selling is a merge’s cousin
Selling a building returns gold and frees a tile. Sell before Fight if the piece is a duplicate banner, a mine you will not protect, or a camp that does not match your unit plan. Selling after the shop reroll cost has spiked is how you fund one last wall on wave 9. The gold guide puts sells in the spend order.
Common mistakes
- Merging two barracks on wave 2 because the animation is pretty.
- Leaving four 1-star walls scattered so nothing actually blocks the lane.
- Merging a mine that then sits on the spawn point.
- Chasing tier 6 on one building while the rest of the board is empty.
Empty tiles lose levels. A “pretty” max-tier camp on a naked castle loses levels. Merge to make space for the next role, not to complete a collection. When you are unsure, keep the extra spawner and merge the wall. Then go hold wave 10.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
What is the max merge tier?
Current builds cap buildings at tier 6. Matching type and matching star rank are both required.
Why did my merge not work?
The two pieces were different buildings or different tiers. A 1-star archer will not merge with a 2-star archer.
Should I merge before every Fight?
Only walls, mines, and leftover banners. Leave extra camps unless you need the square.
